As a local producer we get a lot of different questions about our products. We decided to create a blog section to answer some of your questions.
So our first question we would like to answer was about why some yolks are more pale and others are more bright. One reason why a yolk can be a different color depends on what the hen eats. For example, feeding corn or safflower could turn the yolk a darker color while feeding something like wheat or barley could turn their yolks lighter. It all depends on what kind of feed they are put on since the pigment that is put into the yolks (xanthophylls) comes from what the hens eat and is not produced by her. Since our hens our free range they eat a lot of different bugs and grasses that effect the colors of there yolks. Feel free to ask whatever questions you may like, we will try to answer them as best as we can! |
